The Classic Monopoly Chance and Community Chest cards have had lots of tweaks over the years.

Before 2008, there were different versions of the Chance and Community Chest cards in the US, the UK, and other countries. In 2008, they were standardized with just small differences (like ‘Advance to Boardwalk’ versus ‘Advance to Mayfair’).

In October 2021, the Monopoly Community Chest cards got a HUGE shakeup, as for the first time in the history of Monopoly, the whole deck was re-written!

In this article, I’ve listed all of the Chance and Community Chest cards that you’ll find in Classic Monopoly sets in the USA and UK, including the new Community Chest cards for 2021 onwards.

I’ve also listed some historic cards that you might remember from older Monopoly sets.

It’s worth remembering that any cards which ask you to pay fees must be paid to the bank.

A lot of people think that they pay their money into some sort of Monopoly treasure chest which then gets won when you land on Free Parking. No. That’s a house rule that slows the game down – I really don’t recommend it.

Historical Chance and Community Chest cards

If some cards appear to be missing from the lists above, that’s because they were retired in 2008 or perhaps even earlier. I spent my childhood playing with a British Monopoly set from the 1970s and I certainly remember some different cards.

The Money Grab Chance Card

The Money Grab Chance card was included in Monopoly sets made in 2018, replacing the ‘Bank pays you dividend of $50’ card. According to this card, you must throw all of the $100 bills from the bank into the air. All players race to catch them and any that you catch are yours.

Money Grab Chance Card

This card was obviously a gimmick to promote the Monopoly Cash Grab game with the cash blaster gun that was released around the same time.

However, a lot of Monopoly players (myself included) hate this card and refuse to play with it. What should be a relaxing sit-down game can turn into something where you have to get up and fight. Plus, you can pretty much guarantee that your Monopoly money is going to get ripped or crinkled.

New Community Chest cards from 2021

The new Monopoly Community Chest cards were added to Classic Monopoly sets and Monopoly mobile games from October 2021.

Leading up to the change, fans voted on which cards they would like to see featured over at MonopolyCommunityChest.com.

Each of the new Community Chest cards has a focus on community. They include feel-good moments that reflect the best things about being part of a community.

Eric Nyman, Chief Consumer Officer at Hasbro said: “The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, and clearly today community is more important than ever. We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest Cards. We’re really excited to see what new cards get voted in!”

I must admit, I’m not a fan of these new Community Chest cards at all! One of the things I love about Monopoly is that the cards have a history that’s not so relevant to current times. I don’t really know what ‘your building loan matures’ means, but it’s familiar.

There are plenty of other Monopoly versions for people who like different cards. Even the Electronic Banking Edition has cards like ‘You are runner up in a reality TV show, collect $100K’.

Another potential issue I see with the new Community Chest is that the actions don’t relate to the payments at all. I mean, ‘you donate to the animal shelter’ requires you to PAY $50, yet ‘you knit sweaters for cats in the animal shelter’ means that you COLLECT $20. It’s not that logical.

Judging by the comments on the Monopoly Facebook page, I’m not alone in these views.

The Bottom Line

There have been many minor tweaks to Monopoly Chance and Community Chest cards over the years, but the cards in classic Monopoly were the same for many years, until the big Community Chest reset.

It’s a shame, but all games do modernize eventually.

Make sure you read up on the difference between Chance and Community Chest cards too – a lot of people don’t fully understand the rules for these Monopoly cards. In particular there are misunderstandings around the Monopoly chance card rules and whether they’re optional or not.
